Which format should I choose for retail?
EAN-13 (Europe) or UPC-A (North America): those are the checkout formats. Official EAN numbers are issued by GS1 — the generator encodes your number, it does not assign one.
Will my barcode scan properly?
Yes if printing rules are respected: strong contrast, quiet zones (margins) around the code, sufficient size. Always test a print run before production.
